Why the Packers Shouldn't Want a Home Playoff Game

If you are a Packers fan, you should be happy about the fact that your team has all but clinched the top seed in the NFC, but you shouldn't be quite so happy that the game must be played at Lambeau Field. Before you rattle off how great the Packers at Lambeau throughout their history, just think about the other top seeds in the NFC...

San Francisco 49ers- This is a team built on power football. Harbaugh has made this team into a real contenter, and in the conditions that Green Bay will most likely have at this time of year they will give the Packers all they can handle. If it was in San Francisco you are probably still going to need a light coat, but nothing like the Frozen Tundra of Green Bay.

New Orleans Saints- This is a team with a similar style, but again, the Packers style of play this year would be much better suited for the warm confines of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Although the Saints would probably be able to put up more points here too, how did getting in a shootout with the Pack work for them in Week 1?

Atlanta Falcons- Since I am a Falcons fan, I have to throw my team up with contenders in the NFC even if I only half believe it myself. I think we all know how the Packers offense looked last year in the Georgia Dome... :(

Again, I don't want to downplay the importance of being in your home stadium with your fans cheering you on, but Aaron Rodgers is the Packers no, and there is no denying that. Just from the last playoffs, we saw how much better the Packers looked in the Georgia Dome and in the Super Bowl than in cold weather games in Philly and Chicago. Just something to ponder during the last few weeks of the season. Maybe they will ask to play on a neutral field?

  1. Simmons, I hate to say it. But I couldn't disagree more with this post. Also, keep in mind this is coming from a Vikings fan who has been raised to hate the Pakers more than anything.

Aaron Rodgers has never shown any trouble playing in cold weather. In fact in the last two years, in their last december game at Lambeau, they have put up 45 and 48 points. Does not seem like their offense was slowing down too much.

To say the saints would rather play in Green Bay than New Orleans is absolutely ludicrous. The saints are not a good team outdoors. Two of their three losses this year have been outside, and two of their closer games to much weaker opponents have been outside as well. (Panthers, Titans) The Saints offense may be the only offense in the league that is more one dimensional than the Packers. At least the Packers have some semblance of a running game.

I can see where you are coming from with San Francisco, but there is still no way the packers have a better chance of winning in Candlestick than in Green Bay. The 49ers are a young team that hasn't made the playoffs in 8 years. Making them go into the frigid cold and all the added pressure of playing at Lambeau, they will crack.

  2. I also forgot to add the most important point...THE PACKERS ARE USED TO PLAYING THERE AND IN THE COLD. THE OTHER TEAMS ARE NOT.

  3. In a recent interview Jordy Nelson said he would rather play in a dome against anybody (except for the Saints) than play against a running team at Lambeau in the winter.

  4. well thank you Henno. Again, I do not strongly feel like they should not want to play there, but there is no denying that, at least in last year's playoffs, they played much better indoors.

  5. and I did not say anywhere that the Saints would rather play in Green Bay, I just wanted to address anyone who would have the obvious thought that the Saints would benefit from playing in the Benz Superdome as well.
