The timeless start of baseball

It really is amazing what the sense of smell can do to you. Thanks to the recent episode of 30 Rock, Tracy Morgan has taught me that the sense of smell is actually the most important sense for memory. For me, and millions of others across the home of the brave, the smell of spring means only one thing: It’s baseball season.

Nationally, Training has Sprung

Baseball is under way once again, and all 30 teams have started playing exhibition games and imitating Tim Kurkjian.  I for one am more excited about the Kurkjian imitations, but hey, that's just me.  The Washington Nationals have been playing in the wonderful Viera, Florida where Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg are garnering most of the attention.  The Juggernats eeked out a victory against the collegiate Hoyas of Georgetown and took two losses to the woeful Astros.  Fear not Nats fans, for these are merely exhibition games and the Nationals also now have NATITUDE.

Where we Stand Now

I’ve been about the biggest possible Nationals fan since their first game in 2005. And not since that first game, have I literally felt a tingling feeling excitement pulse throughout my body. That being said, this tingling feeling is more one of cautious optimism than blind faith in the team. I now bring you my breakdown of the Nationals’ off-season, and where we stand going forward.

Why Jose Reyes to the Nats Makes Sense

The Washington Nationals showed a commitment to spending money towards building a contender when they signed Jayson Werth for seven years and 126 million dollars, making him the 14^th highest paid player in baseball history. Although nearly everyone, including Nationals fans themselves, realized that Werth was being severely overpaid, it was important for the Lerner family to show the Washington faithful that they were devoted to making the Nats a contender after six disappointing seasons in Washington. Although Werth had a down year, drawing boos from Nats fans and mockery from the national media, Wilson Ramos, Jordan Zimermann, Danny Espinosa, and of course, Stephen Strasburg gave the Nationals reason to believe that the future is bright. There has been a lot of talk about the Nats going after one of this summer’s big name free agents, and while most people are advocating a run at Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder, the hot stove’s top two sluggers, the Nationals should look in a different direction: shortstop and lead-off hitter Jose Reyes.

Brian's Gone

Earlier today the Astros claimed Brian Bixler off of waivers, ending his short tenure with the Nationals.  It makes sense that the Nationals feel as if they no longer need him with Steve Lombardozzi, and further down the pipeline Anthony Rendon, waiting for their turn to play in the Nationals’ infield.  With that said, I am sad to see Bixler go.  Members inside the Nationals organization admired Bixler’s work ethic.  Before games you could see Bixler getting his reps in all over the field while Ian Desmond did whatever Ian Desmond does before games.  This past year he notched appearances at 6 different positions for the Nats.
