Why I Love Tebow, Even if You Hate Him

Tim Tebow has made one of the most boring, irrelevant teams in all of football fun to watch.  That alone is a commendable feat.  Bill Simmons tweeted earlier tonight, “I’m irrationally excited for this Broncos-Jets game”.  However most people don’t watch the Broncos because they want to see good football-- that is why one watches the Packers.  People watch the Broncos because they want to watch Tim Tebow: @DJShampoooo before gametime Thursday night, “EVERY DAY I’M TEBOWING”.  And I would argue people watch Tim Tebow not because he is a particularly fun player to watch, but because they want to be right.  And up to this point, whether you hate Tebow or love him, you have most likely felt justified in your beliefs.

Those who support Tebow will point to his miraculous comeback against the dolphins and his 3-1 record on the year when starting.  Tim Tebow is a winner they say.  Skeptics counter by exposing his 44 percent completion percentage and arguing that his style of quarterbacking is gimmicky, will fade over time, and is moving in the opposite direction of other successful quarterbacks and teams.  Both sides have valued points and neither will be proven right or wrong by the end of the season.  But because both sides feel as if they have been proven right already, at least to some extent, the debate has become increasingly polarizing.
Tebow is not only polarizing in his skillset; his insistence to wear his religion for the country to see has also created a separation between football fans.  Many Americans are turned off by religious diehards and consider Tebow to be one.  Tebow shouldn’t use his platform to promote his religion because it has nothing to do with football.  On the other hand Tebow is one of the best role models in sports and promotes a set of admirable values.
Tebow’s religion and unique skillset have created one of the most controversial sports debate that doesn’t involve some crazy scandal.  Wherever you lie on the Tebow spectrum, you’re somewhere on the spectrum.  So whether you are rooting for or against Tim Tebow tonight, let’s take a minute to celebrate the fact that you are rooting at all.

  1. Lombardi Super Bowl teams, the most boring display of power football ever seen but they won and hence the Lombardi Trophy. Go figure?

  3. Are you saying the 1-4 Broncos were a fun team to watch this year before Tebow started? Or when they were 4-12 last year?
