Songs For Days

Let’s take a look at some of the best songs from sports.  Now I don’t mean the best songs athletes have made.  That list would be a lot shorter and far more humorous.   I’m talking about the songs you hear and immediately think of something sports.  Without further ado here are the Top 10 songs in sports with a few honorable mentions.

#10 Wavin Flag (K’naan)- The 2010 World Cup anthem is an enjoyable song that was played constantly leading up to, during, and after the World Cup.  It's catchy chorus encourages national pride and solidarity!

#9 My Name is Willie (Jamie Foxx- Any Given Sunday)- Any Given Sunday is one of the best bad sports movies.  Al Pacino’s famous speech is the greatest of all time but the inclusion of a scene in which a player loses an eyeball was questionable at best.  However, the song and accompanying music video for ‘My Name is Willie’ certainly added to the film.

#8 Hail to the Redskins- My D.C. bias appears yet again.  This great song is played after the Redskins score a touchdown at Fedex Field.  In other words this song isn’t played very often these days.  Not deserving of a video at this point in time.
#7 Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond)- This song makes me and every Yankees fan in the world want to cut off their arm with a dull Swiss army knife.  Along with invoking memories of the ’04 Red Sox run, this song also makes me think of pink Red Sox hats and red sox fans across America who lovvvvvvvve Josh Lester.

#6 Basketball (Lil’ Bow Wow)- We’re playing bask-et-ball!  Does anyone not love this song?  I really don’t feel like I need to say anything for the inclusion of this song on the list.  Comment if you don’t like this song and explain why.  Please.

#5 Centerfield (John Fogerty)- When I think of this song I think of the 6-year-old boy running out to the centerfield grass for his first little league game of the season.  Fogerty’s tune embodies the innocence and purity that makes baseball great.

#4 Heart of a Champion (Nelly)- This song bumps up at least 4 spots because it samples the NBA on NBC theme song.  The blood, sweat, and tears Nelly put into this song paid off for him in a big way.

#3 Good Ol’ Hockey Game- The only hockey song on the list comes in at number three.  The 3rd best sports song you can name is the good ol' hockey game, and the good ol' hockey game is the third best sports song you can name.

#2 Rock n’ Roll Pt. 2 (Gary Glitter)- Firstly, it’s despicable that drunken Penn St. fans were singing this the night that Joe Paterno was fired.  With that said, watching drunken fans singing this during a football game is very enjoyable.  Listening to this song out of context is very strange.  As is this video...

#1 Take Me Out to the Ballgame- This baseball chorale rings out throughout baseball stadiums during the 7th inning stretch.  Along with being fun to sing along to, this song instills life lessons for baseball fans as well!  For instance it discourages fair-weather fans, teaches fans the proper foods to order at a game, and explains that "If you get three strikes, even the best lawyer in the world can't get you off"- Bill Veeck

National Anthem- It didn’t really feel right putting the national anthem alongside songs by Lil’ Bow Wow and gary Glitter.
Varsity Blues (Wale)- A good song that delves into sports issues but doesn’t have the history the rest of the songs do.
Ice Cream Truck Song- Only an honorable mention because each person has his or her own version of this song.  Still, the jingles of ice cream trucks will forever be associated with youth sports.

  1. While Artest's (World Peace's) Michael Michael might be the worst song ever, gotta say he went hard on "Champions."

  2. This is a great list. My personal #1 would have to be Bugler's Dream, the Olympics theme song. No song gets me more excited. I would also include One Shining Moment, played at the conclusion of every NCAA basketball tournament, and the theme from Chariots of Fire, used in just about every slow-motion scene in history.
